Wedding shopping guide: what to check before you buy
34 product types that families may buy themselves for decor, gifting, return favours, the wedding-day kit, packing and travel. For each one: what it is for, what to check, what to avoid and any safety rules.
How we choose what to include
- We list product types, not brands or models, and we have not tested or rated any product.
- The checks are our own buying criteria. Where a rule applies, such as India’s single-use plastic ban or BIS registration, we cite the official source.
- Buy for reuse where you can, order one sample before bulk orders, and allow time for delivery.
Decor and lighting
Some families hire a decorator for the big events and dress smaller functions, homes and rooms themselves. These are decor types you might buy for that. Buy for reuse where you can: the same lights and fabrics can serve several events and go home afterwards.
Gifting and wrapping
Wedding gifting can run both ways: gifts for the couple, and gifts or favours from the hosts. Plan the wrapping as carefully as the gifts: it is bought in bulk, handled in a rush and often thrown away. Paper, cloth and reusable baskets travel well and avoid the plastic items India no longer allows.
Return favours
Return favours are bought in large quantities, so small details multiply: a weak handle, a missing label or a leaky lid becomes a hundred problems. Order one sample first, check it against the points below, then order the full quantity with time to spare.
Accessories and day-of kit
Long days in heavy outfits are easier with a few small things within reach. Give one helper a bag with these items and make sure they know where it is at every event.
Packing and storing outfits
Wedding outfits are heavy, embroidered and expensive to replace. Packing by event, with every bag labelled, saves the last-minute search for one dupatta or one pair of earrings.
Travel for the couple and guests
Destination weddings and outstation guests mean trains, flights and long drives. These items make travel days smoother. Airline rules on batteries and bag sizes change, so check your airline before you fly.
